I was absolutely honoured to win the Emerald Award for best unpublished manuscript at the recent RWA (Aust) conference in Melbourne. The contest is one of the few ‘full manuscript’ contests out there and it is judged by readers, not other authors. Basically you submit your whole book for review and a shortlist of 15 are chosen. Those 15 are then re-submitted and re-judged and three finalists chosen. Those finalists are sent to a final judge for review. This year, the final judge was Wanda Ottewell at Harlequin SuperRomance. And my entry was . . . Cassie’s Grand Plan! Just goes to show how important those contests can really be – I owe my ‘big break’ to the Emerald!
